Classic Lancia Logo
Founded in 1906, Lancia went without a logo for the first three years of its existence, meaning that models produced during the 1907, 1908, and 1909 model years bore no corporate marque, but rather a simple brass plaque bearing the model code and identifying “Lancia & C.” as the manufacturer. In some cases, the brass plaque was accompanied by the word Lancia, also in brass script, fastened to the grill.
Modern Lancia Logo
It wasn’t until 1910 that a proper logo was commissioned by the upstart automaker. One designer submitted six proposals. The chosen logo was a blue and gold roundel design. As the word Lancia is Italian for Lance, in the roundel was a lance acting as the flagpole to a blue flag bearing the company’s namesake. Behind the lance and flag, and set inside the roundel, was a gold four-spoke steering wheel with a hand-throttle fastened to the right spoke. A 1911 Gamma 20 HP was the first vehicle to bear the new Lancia marque.
In 1929 the logo was laid over a blue shield. In the ensuing years, the design would be simplified, with gold being removed in 1957. A new logo was introduced for 2007 that eliminated the lance, flag, and steering wheel altogether, modernizing the look to coincide with a corporate restructuring.
At Modern Classics, most of the Lancias in our showroom come from the 1970s and wear either the 1957 or 1974 logo design.
