The vehicle offered.

This example has benefitted from a very high quality complete ground up restoration. With less than 500 miles since completion this car is period correct and it has retained its numbers matching engine. Believed to be an original Washington state car this car began its professional restoration in 2012. The car was in relatively good condition and very original. It was stripped to bare metal and completely disassembled. The floor boards were replaced and the body was sorted. Most of the suspension components were restored. Once the chassis was rolling it was off to paint. While the car was being meticulously resprayed and re-assembled the original engine was being rebuilt. The Morris Brothers in Salt Lake City did the full rebuild. The car was restored where needed, as a new windshield was installed. But the car retains its original glass. In fact the entire vehicle received new or refurbished hardware, seals, and gaskets. The wheels are period correct and are wrapped in new tires. A binder holds detailed receipts, and restoration documents pertinent to the vehicles story.

A true sports car belongs on the road. That is exactly where this car is at home. With the engine still under a break in period this car is begging to be driven. The steering is exceptionally tight and the suspension is very civilized. All of the lights function as they should. The engine starts up without hesitation. The clock ticks, the original radio functions, and the odometer rolls over. All of the gauges are extremely clean and functional. The interior lights switch on as they should. The car received a new carpet kit and rubber floor mats. Being behind the wheel of this Porsche is truly is a special place to be.

Historical significance.

75bhp, 1,582 cc air-cooled horizontally-opposed four-cylinder engine, four-speed manual gearbox in rear-mounted transaxle, independent front suspension with parallel trailing arms, transverse laminated torsion bars and anti-roll bar, independent rear suspension with swing axles and transverse torsion bars, and four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes. Wheelbase: 82.7″

The 356 was the first mass-produced car to bear the Porsche moniker and enjoy the worldwide success that would make way for the introduction of the company’s 911 model in the mid-1960s. Under the leadership of Ferry Porsche, son of the company founder and patriarch, development initially relied on Volkswagen components. Unibody construction was paired with a four-cylinder, horizontally-opposed engine to produce a light, relatively quick, and tremendously enjoyable sports car.

Evolution and sales success came quite quickly. Max Hoffman, importer extraordinaire, exposed the entire American market to the virtues of Porsche performance and engineering, establishing a devoted following for the various 356 iterations, particularly the Speedster, for which he is largely credited. The cars were continually refined, with displacement increasing from 1,086 cc all the way to 1.6 liters and even beyond.

After the end of 356B production in July 1963, the 356C was introduced – the final version before the introduction of the 911, which finally arrived on the U.S. market for the 1965 model year. Besides the revised hubcaps and Dunlop four-wheel disc brakes, however, changes were rather minor.
